Trail Running

These days you'll usually find me on the trails. It started with a first marathon on the Virginia Creeper Trail, and it's grown into mountain 50ks around the Blue Ridge and a 12-hour race where I covered 44 miles — this fall I'm going back for 50.

I write about training over at TrainForUltra.

How it started

From soccer fields to summits

I grew up playing soccer, and in high school I ran track during the soccer off-season — the 800m, both solo and relay, and the 2-mile. In college at UNC Charlotte I got into disc golf, started running the course between throws, and then just… kept running.

Later I run-commuted across San Francisco for several years — Cow Hollow, Telegraph Hill, and Russian Hill to Rincon Hill, SoMa, and the Financial District — usually beating the bus. The long runs got longer: starting back in 2013 I'd run from the Mission District across the Golden Gate Bridge and into Marin County — Tennessee Valley, Mount Tamalpais, and everywhere in between — working up to 24 miles.

I wanted to train for and run the North Face 50, but work always got in the way of training seriously while living in San Francisco. Moving to the Appalachian Mountains during the pandemic was part of the plan to fix that. If things had gone differently I'd have hiked the entire Appalachian Trail — instead I found a property that works for me, where I can train, travel nearby, and keep showing up at start lines.
